Line Sorter
Sort lines of text alphabetically, reverse-alphabetically, or by length. Works entirely in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the sort handle numbers?
As strings, character by character — so "10" sorts before "2". Add leading zeroes ("02", "10") if you need natural numeric sort.
Does it handle non-English characters?
It compares Unicode code points, which is close to but not identical to correct locale-specific alphabetical order for languages with accented letters or non-Latin scripts.
Does it remove duplicates?
No — use the Duplicate Line Remover for that. Sort and dedupe are separate operations.
The Line Sorter reorders a list of lines alphabetically (A→Z or Z→A) or by length. It's useful for keyword lists, URL lists, redirect maps, glossaries, and any other line-per-item file you want to organise before importing, reviewing, or presenting. Sorting is done in your browser using JavaScript's standard string comparison.
How to Use This Tool
Paste your list, choose ascending, descending, or by length, and press Sort. The sorted list appears in the output box ready to copy.
SEO Best Practices
Sort keyword lists alphabetically before scanning for duplicates or grouping related terms visually. Sort by length (shortest first) to see head keywords and long-tails separately at a glance. For URL lists, alphabetical sort naturally groups pages under the same directory together, which makes redirect audits much easier.
Example
A list of 60 unsorted service-area cities comes back in strict A→Z order so you can spot missing entries (no city starting with "M" between "Manchester" and "Newport", for example).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't rely on this for locale-specific sorting (Swedish å, Spanish ñ, Chinese pinyin) — browser default sort compares raw code points, not locale-correct order. Don't sort a CSV using this tool if the first line is a header row; the header will drift into the data.
